Sherrod Warren

Sherrod WARREN Sr. (b. 1823 GA, Died after Civil War) m.ca. 1849 Jackabed PACE (b. 19 May 1819-d. 10 Feb 1895). Sherrod was the youngest of three sons born to John Warren, Sr. and his wife Martha. As a young boy he saw firsthand the Indian troubles. Sherrod married at age 27. Sherrod listed himself as a farmer in census records in Heard County, Georgia. In the early days of his marriage his brothers and father all resided in nearby households. By 1860 his one brother Reuben moved to Alabama. A family descendent said that although no one has yet found military records for him in the Civil War, his wife Jackabed said he came home sick from the Civil War with measles, then after taking a bath in the river, died the next day.
Although people feel that Jackabed's name is supposed to be spelled Jochabed like the woman from the bible, the fact is that her husband called her 'Jokey' and her gravestone, whether correct or not says Jackabed, so I have chosen to honor that and leave her name alone. Jackabed Pace's parents were Stephen Pace, Jr. and his wife Judith BUCHANAN. She was one of thirteen children born to this union. In their listing of children she is listed as Jacebel Pace. Her family lived in Heard County, GA. This can be a bit confusing as Stephen Pace, Jr. (her father) had as his father Stephen Pace, Sr. who also married a Buchanan, although it was Catherine Buchanan, the daughter of Joseph Buchanan of NC. Judith Buchanan (Jackabeds mother) was the daughter of a different Buchanan, William Buchanan.
Jackabed (Pace) Warren moved from Heard Co. TX to the Oakland Community, Rusk Co. TX, to live with her son Uriah George 'Duncan' Warren following the death of her husband. She herself died Feb 1885 of pneumonia during one of the coldest winters on record in Rusk Co TX. Her entire family was so ill almost no one could attend the funeral. She was Methodist and attended the Fountainhead Methodist Church in Henderson TX but because of the severe winter and conditions of frozen ground she was buried 'where it was the nearest and most accessible'. She was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Rusk Co TX, site of an early Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It is 11 mi east of Henderson on a dirt road that turns off Farm Road 2867. A historical marker directs the way.

Their children were:
Sherod 'Bullis' WARREN, b.ca. 1850
Martella WARREN b.ca. 1853
Uriah George 'Duncan' WARREN b.28 Oct. 1854 d. 4 Feb. 1930. Buried in Pirtle Baptist Cemetery, Rusk Co. TX.

John Stephen WARREN b. 17 July 1857 Heard Co GA d. 1942. Buried Pirtle Baptist Cem. Rusk Co. TX m. Effie E.

John Stephen Warren and Uriah G. 'Duncan' Warren moved from Heard County, Georgia into Rusk County, Texas. Sherod 'Bullis' Warren moved from Heard County to Tallageda, Alabama.
